The Energy of Sines and Santiago do Cacém

The Sines refinery, responsible for part of Portugal's energy supply, has linked Galp and its Foundation to the communities of Sines and Santiago do Cacém for almost five decades. Alongside the transformation of this industrial asset, we also sought to get to know the socioeconomic context of these Alentejo Litoral municipalities, get closer to their people, and map the most relevant social partners at local level. Together, we designed the projects that give shape to our engagement plan in this community: the Energy of Sines and Santiago do Cacém.

Sines and Santiago do Cacém

For us, the Energy of Sines and Santiago do Cacém lies in its people. These are the stories of some of them.

In Sines and Santiago do Cacém, action on our strategic axes - access to energy, access to education, and reducing inequalities - is complemented by the protection of biodiversity

S

We promote sustainable energy

We have installed solar panels at the Humanitarian Associations of Volunteer Firefighters of Sines and Santo André, as well as at Cercisiago, a co-operative in Santiago do Cacém dedicated to the rehabilitation and social integration of people with disabilities.

After meeting the energy needs of these institutions, the surplus clean energy can be shared with other local organisations in a collective solar self-consumption circuit with a social purpose.

Energy efficiency projects were also carried out at Cercisiago and Clube Galp Sul, ranging from renovating the domestic hot water plant to completely replacing the lighting.

E

We support education and inclusion

With the Entrepreneurs for Social Inclusion (EPIS)  association, we reward the academic merit of students from these municipalities with university scholarships, helping to combat school drop-outs for economic reasons.

To promote energy literacy, we organise study visits to the Sines refinery, inviting young people to get to know the industrial complex and the various professions 'behind' its operation.

We promote skills for the future

We took the iMAGINE project to the Alentejo coast. Developed by DiVERGE, a Portuguese sneaker brand, this training and mentoring programme is aimed at young people in situations of social exclusion.

Throughout the programme, participants develop essential employability skills - such as communication, entrepreneurship, and marketing - and apply them to the creation of a micro-business and a unique product: a pair of trainers that reflects their identity, which is put up for sale. For each sale completed, the participants receive a commission, becoming an active part of the business.

We involve our volunteers

In 2024, we organised almost a dozen volunteer initiatives in Sines and Santiago do Cacém, with the energy of 187 employees. In the coming years, we will renew our commitment.

S

We support our social partners

We support the social mission of more than 60 institutions with a social and cultural impact.

We are social investors, we provide food baskets, Galp products and services, among other goods, and we involve Galp volunteers in various initiatives.

H

We address housing poverty

The right to a decent home is enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, data from Eurostat in 2020 revealed that 25 per cent of the population in Portugal lived in houses with leaks, damp, or rotting windows and floors.

With the Just a Change association and the dedication of 93 volunteers, including 35 from Galp, we rehabilitated eight houses in the region, directly improving the physical and emotional wellbeing of the 16 beneficiaries.

C

We invest in culture and sport

Because culture and sport are fundamental elements for the sustainable development of communities, in 2013 we financed the construction of the Sines Multipurpose Pavilion. The space hosts national and international sports competitions, as well as cultural and social events.

In Santo André, we became official sponsors of the Atlético Basquete Clube de Santo André, now BSA Galp. We are also partners of the Festival Músicas do Mundo, an emblematic cultural event in the region.

B

We protect biodiversity

Protecting biodiversity is a priority. That's why we support CRASSA - Santo André Wild Animal Recovery Centre, run by Quercus. This centre is dedicated to the recovery of native fauna, taking in injured or debilitated animals - mostly birds - with the aim of returning them to their natural habitat.
